Volunteer Opportunities
In order to achieve success in college preparatory coursework, many students need small group or individualized help.
Math tutors are needed Tuesday through Friday for freshman and sophomore algebra and geometry students (during study time) to help those with low basic skills get a better foundation. Volunteers will be trained and assigned to a student one or more days (Tuesday - Friday) from 9:35-10:20 or 10:27-11:15 or both times. Tutors can also work one-on-one in math classes between the hours of 7:45 and 4:00.
Literacy tutors are needed for students who struggle with reading, writing or both. Volunteers will be assigned to work with a student during study period from 9:35-10:20 T-Fri or 10:30-11:15 T-Friday or both times. Background/training will be provided by an English teacher.
Mentors are needed for Cristo Rey students. Mentor responsibilities include making regular contact in person at Cristo Rey during lunch (11:20-12:15), offering encouragement and support. Lunch every other week is the current practice any day Tuesday through Friday. It is helpful if mentors have recent familiarity with the college experience.
Special event volunteers are needed to help Cristo Rey with its signature event, Dancing with the Kansas City Stars. With 1,000 guests, there are numerous ways to help. Some positions are "day-of" and others are longer term.
Bi-lingual volunteers (Spanish and English) are needed in the admissions office periodically to make calls to potential students/parents.
Admissions interviewers assist Cristo Rey staff in their extensive interviews of potential students on Shadow Days (once a month in the afternoon). Volunteers needed for several hours on those days. Training provided.
Clerical assistants will be assigned to specific departments. Hours are flexible. Typical tasks are data entry, filing, assembling and making phone calls.
On-call volunteers are called upon for periodic special projects, usually mailings, data entry and filing.
