Carlos joined MINDDRIVE in 2013. A student at Cristo Rey High School, his natural talents drove him to be a leader. Quick to learn and master any tool put in front of him, he enjoyed and excelled in the Saturday automotive class. He formed a special bond with Mentor Chip Schmelzer. He and Chip met weekly to check-in and this quickly grew into a friendship. During our 2014 Raise Your Hand Tour to California, Carlos was given the opportunity to speak in front of press and politicians outside the San Francisco City Hall about the impact project-based learning and mentors had in his life.
After his second year at MINDDRIVE, Carlos successfully graduated from high school. Chip and Carlos remained close and Chip was influential in getting him enrolled in Construction Management classes at MCC-Business & Technology Campus. Carlos continued to join us on Saturdays, now sharing his experiences with he students in his own new role as a Mentor.
We're thrilled to announce he has begun an educational job training through Faith Technologies in Lenexa, KS.
"Currently Carlos is working for us as an Electrical Helper. I have sponsored him for our accredited spring electrical apprenticeship. The application process will take a couple weeks.
The program is a 4 year in house taught by Faith instructors. We put the employee in a position to obtain his journeyman license after 3-4 years. He will be in class at our office for 1 week every 8-9 weeks until he finishes the program. One of the best parts of the program for the apprentice is we pay them their normal wage while in class and as long as they keep their grades up the apprentice will not owe any money for the program.
We are very excited to see Carlos grow professionally and in the company. His current work assignment is in our pre fabrication facility. He’s getting a good understanding of how devices, cabinets, and lighting are being built. He’s also on the ground floor of some cutting edge designs builds in that shop."
