Today, the Cristo Rey Network announced a $558,000 grant from the Deloitte Foundation to provide critical college scholarship funds to graduating seniors in the Class of 2021. This grant provides $18,000 to each of the 31 of 37 Cristo Rey Network schools with a senior class to assist students for whom financial support will be critical for college enrollment.
"During this exciting college decision season, the Deloitte Foundation's investment in our students reflects the organization's profound belief in the promise of our young men and women, our country's future leaders," said Elizabeth Goettl, Cristo Rey Network President and CEO. "We are grateful for the Deloitte community's commitment to the success of our mission, both locally and nationally."
Each local Cristo Rey school's college counseling team, along with school leaders, are selecting recipients, named Deloitte Foundation Scholars, who have been admitted to college and intend to pursue majors in accounting, computer science, and/or data analytics. In addition to demonstrating financial need, Deloitte Foundation Scholars must demonstrate academic and leadership excellence.
"In its mission to drive initiatives that help prepare the next generation of diverse business leaders, the Deloitte Foundation is proud to award these scholarships to Cristo Rey high school students," remarked Janet Foutty, executive chair of the board, Deloitte US and chair, Deloitte Foundation. "During the pandemic, the disruption to education has been dramatic, particularly for racially and ethnically diverse communities. We are excited to help propel these high-performing students on their journeys from high school, to college and career success."
In the face of significant COVID-19 challenges, Cristo Rey Network is developing and scaling innovative resources and tools to not only sustain, but increase, strong college enrollment and completion. Deloitte Foundation Scholars, along with all Cristo Rey college enrollees, will receive individualized guidance from an alumni advisor employed at a local Cristo Rey school, as students navigate their postsecondary trajectory.
"Deloitte and Deloitte Foundation's extensive collaboration with Cristo Rey high schools is helping to unleash the potential of our students, who aspire to lead their generation and the generations to come," said Cristo Rey Philadelphia President John McConnell.
Jennifer Galvan Rodriguez, a member of Cristo Rey Kansas City's Class of 2021, met all qualifications for the scholarship and will enter the University of Missouri - Kansas City in the fall. Jennifer plans to pursue a degree in accounting.
